Treatments of Varicose Veins in Legs

Treatments of Varicose Veins in Legs: At Vascular Centers of Excellence, we have the state-of-the-art knowledge and technology for the management of your veins. With that said, we like to be conservative and recommend preventing and caring for your legs first. Start with the following:

Lifestyle Changes: Regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding prolonged periods of sitting or standing can help manage symptoms.

Regular Exercise: Engage in regular physical activity to promote good circulation. Activities such as walking, swimming, and cycling can help improve blood flow and strengthen the muscles that support vein health.

Prescription Compression Stockings: These specially designed stockings apply pressure to the legs, helping to improve blood flow and alleviate symptoms. Remember there is an appropriate pressure and sizing for every person. There are no one-size-fits-all compression stockings.

Elevation: Elevating the legs when resting can assist in reducing swelling.

Medical Procedures: In more severe cases, medical procedures may be recommended, such as endovenous ablation, sclerotherapy, or micro-phlebectomy (vein stripping is old school and seldom recommended nowadays).

Endovenous Ablation: This minimally invasive procedure to close off problematic veins. There are thermal and non-thermal (chemical) methods.

Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT) or Endovenous Radiofrequency Ablation (EVRA):

Procedure: These methods use energy to heat and close off faulty veins.

Applicability: thermal ablation is suitable for larger veins.

Number of Sessions: Typically, one or two sessions are needed.

Recovery Time: No downtime, with compression stockings recommended.

Ambulatory Micro-Phlebectomy:

Procedure: In this procedure, needle-size incisions are made to physically remove the affected veins.

Applicability: Suitable for larger varicose veins that are near the skin’s surface.

Number of Sessions: Typically, one session is sufficient.

Recovery Time: Moderate recovery, with compression stockings recommended.

Superficial Laser and Pulsed Light Treatments (Intense Pulsed Light – IPL):

Procedure: Superficial laser therapy and IPL use directed light to target spider veins (imagine a magnifying glass under the sun).

Applicability: Effective for small-sized veins.

Number of Sessions: Multiple sessions may be needed.

Recovery Time: Minimal downtime, but sun protection is advised.

It’s essential to consult with a vascular specialist if you suspect you have vein problems, especially if you experience pain, swelling, or other symptoms. They can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment options based on the severity of the condition.
