Varicose Veins in Men

While varicose veins are more commonly associated with women, men can also develop this condition. The prevalence of varicose veins in men is lower than in women, but it still occurs, and the risk factors are generally similar. With that said, a landmark study in venous disease found that, although women had nearly twice the rate of moderate disease as men did, men had higher rates of severe disease.  Occupational factors in men increase the risk of developing vein disease over three-fold. Jobs that involve prolonged periods of standing or sitting can contribute to the development of varicose veins. Professions such as construction, factory work, and jobs that require long hours of standing can increase the risk of developing varicose veins.

In my experience, men tend to withstand their symptoms for a long time before seeking medical attention. Remember that vein disease is progressive and more difficult to care for over time. Please schedule a consultation with our vascular specialists for a thorough evaluation, discuss your symptoms and medical history, and recommend appropriate measures for treatment.
